HLADE “Circle Chats”
Monthly Support Groups are informal and held once per month in Newark and Dover. We have a contact person in Sussex County. Individuals who may have or hearing loss or know they have one and would like more information on hearing testing, hearing aids, cochlear implants, technology or living with hearing loss are welcome to attend. We hope to offer both in-person and Zoom at all our meetings in the future. We invite family members of people that have hearing loss or their caregivers to contact us. We also welcome professionals too!:)
We encourage you to contact your Hearing Loss Association of Delaware representative and attend a meeting in your area. There you’ll meet others who are coping with their hearing loss just like you!
Support Groups offer the opportunity to share common issues and concerns in a caring, non-judgemental, positive and supportive small group.
Members believe that by helping one another and learning self -help skills, then members and their families will be better able to help others understand more about hearing loss and more success in coping with and living with hearing loss.
You’ll learn about hearing health care providers, about different hearing aids, cochlear implants, and about other assistive listening devices, about captioning, and about accessibility issues in the community.
You’ll learn about all aspects of hearing loss. Family members are encouraged to attend meetings and any trainings which may become available:
Training: – HLADE offers training when the need exists in such topics as “listening skills,” learning to live with hearing loss”, ” Communications Skills Training,” “Hearing Aids,” and much more.
To obtain a complete list of all trainings, or to sign-up for a training contact us.
The most rewarding aspect of HLADE, however, is the friendships you will make with other hard of hearing and deaf people.
Mentoring- Need-a-Friend Program!! (NFP)
At any point in our lives, everyone has or needs a “mentor.” A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide. If you are new to hearing loss or need to connect with another person that is deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing then HLADE will do our best to connect you or match you with a trusted person with a hearing loss . This is an informal relationship and the person being mentored is responsible for setting up meetings when he or she feels the need to discuss an issue. The mentor can help you learn more about living with hearing loss or how to handle an issue at work, home, school or with a particular person. HLADE will work to find you another person with hearing loss that you can talk to and share ideas on how to help yourself. Exoerience matters and HLADE has years of experience helping people and we will be happy to help find a mentor!! Mentoring has been proven to make a difference to people with hearing loss!!:) Our “Circle Chats” are also a great way to meet new people in person and find a friend that can mentor you and meet with you One-On-One!!:)
